He was born August 10, 1948 in Kenton to the late Harold and Mary (Dodds) Oates. He was also preceded in death by his former wife, Shirley Mae Oates.

On April 20, 1943 she married Paul R. Oberdier at the Ridge home on Harmon-Patrick Road. He died on December 5, 1996. She was also preceded in death by brothers, Park, Dwight, Paul, Hugh and Richard Ridge.
