Merle J. McElroy, Jr.


Merle J. McElroy, Jr., 86 of Richwood, died peacefully Friday morning, July 17, 2020 at Memorial Gables in Marysville.

He was born July 11, 1934 in York Township to the late Catherine (Thompson) McElroy and Merle J McElroy, Sr. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary E. McElroy, whom he married August 9, 1953, and she died December 14, 2018; two daughters, Cathy McElroy and Diane Lynn Glenz; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Harold (JoAnne) McElroy and Jack (Florence); sister and brother-in-law, Betty (Junior) Moore; and brothers-in-law, Jim Stalder and Gene Cheney.

Merle was raised on a farm in Union County where he learned to appreciate hard work and the great outdoors. He graduated from Richwood High School in 1952 and went on to work at Nestle as well as Memorial Hospital in Marysville. He was a member of the Rush Creek (Essex) United Methodist Church. He enjoyed gardening, OSU sports, fishing, golfing, softball, a game of Euchre as well as playing a good joke. He lived with a kind and caring soul.

Surviving are his son, Scott McElroy of Raleigh, North Carolina; son-in-law, Tom Glenz of Tampa, Florida; grandchildren, Nicholas (Natalie) Dierkes of Asheville, North Carolina; Jan Marie (David Crowder) Dierkes of Morrison, Colorado; two step grandchildren, Thomas P. (Sarah) Glenz and Katie Glenz of Tampa; four great grandchildren, Brooklyn Diane Dierkes and Isaac Leverette Dierkes of Asheville; Cora Diane Dierkes Crowder and Thea Josephine Dierkes Crowder of Morrison; a step-great-granddaughter, Amanda Glenz of Tampa; two sisters, Phyllis Stalder of Florida and Isabelle Cheney of Upper Sandusky; and two brothers, Lowell (Rita) McElroy of North Carolina and Tom (Donna) McElroy of Florida.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday, July 22, 2020 at 11:00 AM in the Price Cemetery with Pastor Joseph Rhea officiating. Friends may call on Tuesday from 5 to 7 PM at the Stofcheck-Ballinger Funeral Home in Richwood.

The family would like to extend their appreciation to Memorial Gables for the compassion and care he received while a resident there, and to Angie Nace for her dedicated care and support for Merle.
