Gary R. Herd |
Gary R. Herd 81, of Magnetic Springs, died peacefully Sunday evening May 27, 2018 at his home.
He was born December 15, 1936 in Delaware to the late Harold E. and Juanita (Rogers) Herd, he was also preceded in death by his step-mother, Mildred (Stults) Coder and a brother, Bill Coder.
Gary was a 1954 graduate of the Magnetic Springs High School, he then served our country in the U.S. Air Force as an electrician, he would use this training the rest of his life as he was a much relied upon local electrician and plumber. Gary could fix just about anything he put his hands on.
Gary belonged to the Magnetic Springs United Methodist Church, he was very proud of his town and spent countless hours volunteering in whatever capacity was needed. He enjoyed farming on his homeplace and could be found many times tinkering in his shop or on his gator roaming the neighborhood, usually with the help of his dear friends, (there might be an ornery joke or story with this group).
Gary had been a member of the former Richwood Lions Club, he worked many years as the electrician for the Richwood Fair and was very proud of his N.T.P.A. number #7001, tractor pulling was a true passion for him.
Family was the center of his life, he did not miss many of his kids and grandkids activities.
Gary was also a very talented dancer, there is a story that this might be the way he caught the eye of his bride.
Surviving is his wife Connie (Cline) Herd, they were married May 22, 1960 in Washington D.C., their kids: Stacey (Jeff) Britton of Richwood and Stephanie (Dave) Romo of Ostrander.
Grandkids: Olivia (Garrett) LeMaster, Jordan (Presleigh) Britton, Cameron and Hayley Romo
Brother: Ronnie (Diane) Coder of Urbana and sister-in-law, Marty Coder of Florida
Funeral services will be held Wednesday June 6, 2018 at 11:00 am at the Magnetic Springs United Methodist Church, Pastor Judy Cramer will officiate, burial will follow in the Hopewell Cemetery, there will be Veteran Military Honors conducted by the Richwood Area Veterans. Friends may call Tuesday from 4-8 pm at the Stofcheck-Ballinger Funeral Home in Richwood.
Memorial gifts may be made to the Magnetic Springs UMC, 113 Olive Street, Magnetic Springs, OH 43036 and or the Loving Care Hospice, PO Box 613 Marysville, Ohio 43040

Dear Aunt Connie, Stacey, Jeff, Stephanie, Dave and family, There are no words I can say to heal the pain of loss. Uncle Gary was and is a good man, a solid man who loved his family so much. He, for me, was a stalwart pillar in those lives he touched. I will always remember his laugh, his easygoing smile and the relaxing way he made those around him feel. He was open and honest and never hesitated to express his love to those around him. I am proud to have been able to call him my Uncle. Even though the years have slipped by, my heart and memory are filled with gratitude and love for you all. May God in his tender mercies fill you with great comfort and surround you with love. Uncle Gary will be missed dearly but I know in my heart, he is surrounded by Love, our heavenly Father who loves him more. Always with Love, Patty

So sorry for your loss, Gary has been a good friend for as long as I can remember. He use to tell me how one day Sam and I were in grandpas haymow playing, Gary must have been fixing something for grandpa, I was afraid to make the jump to the ladder and Sam went to Gary and asked him to help get me down out of haymow. Gary told me that story several times over the years. He was a good man our community won't be the same without him.

Connie,Stacey and Stephanie,
I am so sorry to hear about Gary. Although I didn't see him often after we moved to NC, I still have fond memories from Grandma and Grandpa Herd's house at the holidays and Gary working out at the farm. He got his tall body in some small spots for mom and dad. He will be missed. Love to you all.

My prayers and thoughts are with you in this time of loss. I remember the tall, handsome man, working in his shop while Stephanie and I tanned in the yard. He was always kind and took time to talk to us silly teen aged girls!

Thinking of you as you pass through this valley. May you find comfort in the memories that are yours to cherish.
I remember when I learned that I needed a complete redo of my in house plumbing system and Gary so ably took care of that problem for me.

Dear Connie and family - I am so sorry and know that you will miss Gary so much. We have been friends for a long time, and it just doesn't seem real to me. I'm so glad that I stopped by and visited with you and Gary just a couple weeks ago. I know he was in a lot of pain, so this has been a blessing for him. I know you will take comfort in knowing he is with Jesus and all of you have each other to lean on and many great memories to cherish. Love to you all, Tonya
