Jon D. DavisPheasantJon D. Davis, 76, of Richwood died peacefully Monday evening, May 7, 2018 with his loving and devoted family by his side. He was born February 12, 1942 on the family farm to the late D.K. and Lucille (Livingston) Davis. He was also preceded in death by a brother, R. Don Davis.

Jon graduated from Richwood High School Class of 1960 and attended The Ohio State University for one year.  He joined the Army Reserves in 1962 while working full time at Davis-Hughes Hardware in Richwood.  In 1968, the Davis family started Ken Davis & Sons farrier supply business, where he was co-owner with his father and 2 brothers.  While at Ken Davis & Sons he traveled to many racetracks and the Amish country to deliver horseshoes, making many lifelong friends. Papa Jon shared his love of the outdoors with all of them by spending time fishing, hunting, clay target shooting, and hosting many family campfires on the farm. Other family traditions were Saturday Ohio State tailgate parties, watching horse races at Scioto Downs, and camping trips.

Later in life, he and Brenda enjoyed traveling to many State Fairs from Maine to Nebraska, and the county fairs in Ohio. They were season ticket holders of OSU Women’s Basketball, attended Bluegrass Festivals, and enjoyed bird watching. He especially enjoyed hunting trips to Iowa and fishing trips to Canada.

Surviving are his three daughters, Gina Davis, Richwood; Kathy (Mike) Karcher, Marysville; Krista (Keith) Salyer, Richwood; four grandchildren, Katelyn and Riley Karcher; Gavin and Griffin Salyer; a brother, Robert K. John was such a great guy.  I can't remember ever seeing him in a bad mood.  The year we built the church float in his barn and John dressed up like an old Circuit Preacher and rode his mule behind us, that was a fun year.  John fell off the mule and I think he broke his arm or something, but he never quit smiling.  John was a faithful, honest, loving and welcoming Christian.  I a very blessed to have had the opportunity to call John Davis my friend.

Jon’s life was a sermon on patience, grace, and how to be a gentleman. I’ve been in the tractor for the past few days thinking about him and trying to remember as much as I can about our conversations and time together. I was a 22 year old, fresh-faced kid when I hired on at the store in 2001. Jon had a profound influence on me and was the type of man that I wanted to become. The time we spent bouncing around in the Freightliner, making deliveries in Amish Country as he showed me the ropes, those are my favorite memories. He taught me a lot. Some with words, but much by example. I remember him saying, as we pulled into an Amish homestead, “this guy doesn’t buy a lot, but he always has a good story to tell.” He didn’t categorize people based on how much business they did with the company. Jon just genuinely enjoyed people. He had a way. I always felt that I could talk to Jon and be myself. There would be no judgement and he would listen intently. He taught me that vanilla milkshakes can make for a tasty lunch. Don’t take yourself too seriously. Raising your voice won’t help your cause in a disagreement. And enjoy your family to the fullest. Jon, my heart hurts and the world is a little darker with you leaving it. But I know there are no clouds where you are. DeColores. You’re one of the best men that I’ve known. See you again my friend.

Jon,

I am advised that you have "crossed over"----upon on hearing I immediately had a memory from many years ago-----you and I shared a bus trip to FT Knox for our Army NG Basic Training.  Both of us had no idea what was going to happen and I remember getting off the bus and every DI east of the Mississippi was yelling in our face.  We both made it through with a lot of memories along the way.

Although we did not "hang out much" in Tiger Country---I always knew that you were one of the "Good Guys"   You can take pride in all the people ---especially your family----that you have touched.

You are one of the "Good Guys"--------You left your mark----Rest in Peace -----You are in a good place now and "free".

See you later on the other side---

Roger

Jon was the kindest man I ever met. I worked at the Civic Center and he  was a wonderful President. Always supportive, a great listener and wise counselor.
A beautiful soul, full of love and faith, ascended to heaven, away from us, but closer to God, leaving sadness and yet wonderful memories.

I could always depend on seeing smiles when meeting Jon and Brenda. We always enjoyed sparring with each other with a witty repertoire of words and wordplay. Jon now joins her once again. I know he missed her fiercely. They are now together on the golden streets of Heaven and lounging in the wonderful mansion that Brenda has decorated. Alongside other saints, who our magnificent Lord cares for, they want for nothing. May God ease the heartache on your souls. My prayers are with you.

We were so sorry to hear of your loss.  It was just several weeks ago when we saw Jon and had a nice conversation with him.  One special memory that comes to mind is when Elifrede feel and was life flighted to Columbus following a fall.  Jon went to her house and cleaned the floor so she wouldn't have to come home to blood everywhere.  What a thoughtful gesture and that was truly Jon's nature.  Our thoughts, love and prayers.
